What little blood I had in my body congealed when I considered how close she had come to permanent death. Going by the terror in her eyes, Christina was realizing the same thing—brilliant minds think alike.
“So, you took me home?” she asked the girl, her voice betraying her surprise.
The young vampire nodded at her, “I did.”
“And you put the comforter over the window?”
“I did.”
“But…where on earth did you find it? It isn’t one of mine—and how did you reach high enough to hang it? Can you levitate, or something? I don’t come close to being able to reach that high, and you—you’re so tiny, you make me feel huge!”
Anna’s lips curved into the slightest suggestion of a smile. “I borrowed the blanket and a ladder from your neighbor.” Christina’s eyes widened and she rushed to reassure her, “Don’t worry—the blanket was in an unused pool house, so it shouldn’t be missed, and I returned the ladder when I left.”
“Do they know what you did?” I demanded.
She peeked at me, then lowered her eyes again, “The neighbor? No, I—”
“Not the neighbors—the vampire gang you’re in.”
“Oh,” she cringed and shook her head hard and fast, tousling her hair in the process. “No. They’d kill me if they found out.”
“So, why take the risk?” Two sets of eyes, one light and one dark, stabbed at me accusingly but I didn’t back down. I had my reasons for asking. Call it a hunch.
“She didn’t ask to be bitten. She didn’t ask for this lifestyle to be thrust upon her. She was an innocent,” her voice dropped to a barely heard whisper. “I couldn’t let them sentence her to death to hide their mistake. If I did, I’d be no better than they are.”
I nodded, satisfied. My suspicions were proven correct. She hadn’t joined them out of a desire to do evil, but more out of a sense of fear and need for protection. By the time she realized what she’d done it was most likely too late to escape unscathed. Just to be cautious, I decided to test one more theory, “You gave her some of your blood before you left, as well, did you not?”
Her eyes grew huge, “How did you know…?”
“I was tasked with a routine welfare check at the request of her family after she didn’t respond to calls or texts or answer the door for a couple days.” I rocked back and forth on my feet; a very un-vampire-like habit I’d held onto over the centuries that helped me gather my thoughts. “She seemed normal when she answered the door…she wasn’t driven by bloodlust like most new converts would be. I wondered about that behavior when no enraged and overprotective sire greeted me at the door by her side, ready to rip my head off.” My shoulders rose and fell. “The only likely explanation was if another vampire had fed her while she was in the early stages of transition. If she’d been given enough blood to fuel the process,
